Shannon (Segres) Yorkman, '89 - Girls Basketball
Shannon was another instrumental piece to the great success of the G-F Lady Indians basketball teams of 1997 and 1998. As a two-year starter, Shannon had an unbeatable desire to succeed and a leadership style that demanded the best from those around her. The product of those efforts were two championship seasons: a regional title in 1997 and a state championship in 1998. Her honors are staggering and include the following: 1st team All-Cardinal District, All-Area, All-Northwest Region, and Associated Press All-State in both 1997 and 1998. In her senior year, Shannon was also named 2nd team All-Met, USA Today’s 1st team All-State, and MVP of the Virginia State All-Star game. She was also featured in a Washington Post television commercial and was the feature story on BET’s inaugural show of MAAD Sports. With all her accolades, Shannon will forever be remembered for sending the state championship game to overtime by sinking two free throws with no time left on the clock. She then took over in the overtime period and secured the school’s state title victory. Shannon chose to further her academic and basketball career at the University of South Carolina. She was a three-year captain and would go on to be named to the All-SEC academic team three years in a row. In 2002, Shannon earned her nursing degree. She has since earned two master’s degrees and has been recognized as the Top Nurse in Baltimore by the International Nurses Association. She currently works at Johns Hopkins University as a Nurse Anesthetist. |
