Mel Meadows, '67 Football, Track & Field, Wrestling
Mel was a stellar football player, track athlete, and wrestler from 1965 to 1968. As a football player, he earned All-District, All-Region, and All-State honors as a leader of the undefeated 1968 team that scored 356 points while allowing just 12 in their undefeated run to a Monument District Championship. In wrestling, Mel dominated the 180 lb. weight class with a 19-1-1 record on his way to another championship. The school’s track team relied heavily on his well-rounded athletic ability as he competed and earned the most points in the shot put, discus throw, 440 run and the mile relay. Mel finished 3rd in the Northern Virginia Decathlon Championships. His athletic ability and his leadership skills were instrumental in developing Gar-Field’s winning attitude. Mel was named to the Potomac News’ All-Century football team in 2000. Mel went on to accept a full football scholarship to Purdue University. Upon graduation, he taught at Woodbridge High School before going into real estate. Mel currently lives in Spottsylvania and is credited with developing several prominent shopping centers in Fredericksburg and the surrounding area. |
