Marvin Dent '57 - Baseball, Basketball, Football
Marvin exemplifies all that is great about Gar-Field athletics, playing football, basketball and baseball from 1954 thru 1957. He served as co-captain of the football team and was named to the All Suburban Team and MVP in football and baseball. In football he was fast, agile and strong and he teamed with Eugene Maddox to make a formidable tandem of running backs. In Basketball he scored 225 points in 12 games and was named to the All District and All County team. In baseball, Marvin batted .480 in 1957, leading the team with 24 hits, 12 stolen bases and 5 homeruns. He was all district basketball in 1957. His coaches, including John Suren, considered Marvin one of the most talented and dedicated players that they ever coached. Marvin was signed to a professional contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates, only to end his career two years later due to a back injury. Marvin played for and managed the Prince William Indians Baseball team from 1962 – 1976. Marvin has been instrumental in keeping all of his alumni friends close and in touch at special gatherings a couple of times a year. |
