John Kaila, '69 - Wrestling, Tennis
John was a standout wrestler and tennis player for Gar-Field from 1966 to 1969. He was the captain of the 1968 state championship wrestling team. In his first year of wrestling, John placed third in the state before going on to win undefeated state titles in 1968 and 1969. He was named a High School All-American Honorable Mention and Journal Messenger News Athlete of the Year in 1969. He finished his high school career with a 56-4 record. John also captained and won district and regional team championships in tennis. John went on to attend William & Mary College on a wrestling scholarship where he was a two-time conference and regional champion. He then earned a regular Army commission and served as a Captain in the U.S. Army from 1973 to 1979. John spent a year teaching social studies at Gar-Field before leaving to attend law school. He now lives in Fredericksburg, where he has been practicing law since 1985. It is important to note that John has been happily married to his high school sweetheart Charlene (G-F ’69) since 1971. |
