Joe Miller, '82 - Football, Track & Field
For four years, Joe Miller excited the large crowds in Ralph Barnett Stadium with a combination of size and All-American speed not often seen in a football backfield. By the time he graduated, Joe had amassed numbers that placed him at the top of the county record books for years to come. He received numerous honors at the district, regional, and state levels. As a track standout, Joe ran the 100 meter dash in 10.2 seconds. In 1980, he was the 400 meter individual state champion and a high school All-American. He was a member of the 1980 and 1981 state champion boys indoor track teams, where he competed in the 100, 200, 400, and the 4 x 100, 4 x 200, and the 4 x400 meter relays. In football, Joe rushed for 1,965 yards and was named the 1981 Washington D.C. Touchdown Club’s Timmie Award winner as the Virginia State Player of the Year. He was named All-Met in each of his sophomore, junior and senior seasons and finished his career with 4,375 total yards and 72 touchdowns. At the time of his graduation, Joe’s 3,605 career rushing yards stood as the top mark in Prince William County history and would stand as such for the following 10 years. As a highly touted recruit, Joe first took his football skills to Independence Junior College, Kansas where he rushed for 1,295 yards in his freshman year. He would eventually transfer and letter twice for the nationally ranked Oklahoma State University football program. When Joe touched the ball, both Gar-Field and the opposing team’s fans knew it was “Miller Time”. |
