Jim Artz, Coach
Jim was a coach at Gar-Field for 24 years. In 1967 he began a seventeen-year span as an assistant football coach. He coached the quarterbacks, the running backs, and the receivers. Coach Artz was also a successful offensive coordinator. During his tenure with the football program, Gar-Field enjoyed numerous championships and one state runner-up. This included the famous 1967 team, which finished their championship season with an undefeated 10-0 record. Coach Artz was also an assistant track and field coach and the school’s head golf coach for several years. As if that were not enough, he was also the team’s longtime athletic trainer. He is remembered as a wonderful coach, educator, and mentor. In true G-F fashion, once Coach Artz became an Indian he was so dedicated to the school that he removed all Woodbridge Viking colors from his wardrobe - to this day, he refuses to wear green. After retirement, Coach Artz served as mayor of the Town of Louisa, Virginia for 8 years and still stays in contact with his former students and colleagues. He also takes part in alumni activities and hosts an annual golf tournament for former Gar-Field students, teachers, and coaches. |
