Bruce Schlegel, '67 - Football, Wrestling
Bruce is considered one of the best heavyweight wrestlers to ever come out of Virginia. He was a standout wrestler, football player, and track and field star from 1965 to 1967, earning a combined 8 varsity letters. In wrestling, Bruce was undefeated in the regular season as a sophomore, district and regional champion his junior and senior seasons, and a 20-0 state champion in his senior year. In track and field, Bruce excelled throughout his high school career in the shot put and the discus throw and was a dominating factor on the offensive and defensive lines on the football field. Bruce continued his winning ways in college as he accepted a wrestling scholarship to Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. He had an overall collegiate record of 58-7-1 and was three times named an All-American in the 325 pound Heavyweight Division. He was featured in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd” in 1971 and was a 2017 inductee into the ASU Hall of Fame. Bruce returned to Prince William County after graduating college and taught Industrial Arts/Tech Ed for 36 years at Osbourn Park before retiring in 2007. |
