Robert "Bob" Southworth, '61 Football, Basketball, Track
Bob earned 10 letters (three in football, three in basketball, two in baseball and two in track) while at Gar-Field from 1957 to 1961. In football, he was the 1960 Journal Messenger Most Valuable Player , a member of the All Suburban Virginia Team, and a Scholastic All American. In basketball, he twice made the Journal Messenger All County Team, the All Virginia Group II District Team , the Free Lance Star All Battlefield District Team, the Battlefield District All Star Team, and the Washington Post Other Virginia Category Second-Team. Bob was awarded a scholarship to play football at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI). Upon graduation from VMI, he received a regular Army commission and served four years in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers , reaching the rank of Captain. After his military career, Bob worked for a consulting engineering firm and several Federal agencies . He married the late Suzann Scheid from Falls Church, Virginia, and they have two children and six grandchildren. He retired from the Federal government after spending most of his career at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Bob currently resides in western Fauquier County near Warrenton, Virginia. |
